Interior Design's All-Black Mood

Long the domain of fashionistas and angsty teenagers, head-to-toe black has become the answer for design companies looking to resolve a recurring quandary: How to make classic pieces feel new again. Three years ago, American furniture manufacturer Herman Miller dipped a toe in the anti-color's inky waters and released a tiny run of all-black chairs. They sold out almost immediately, so earlier this year, the company began offering many of its old-school favorites in a custom, blacked-out option.
